June 29 marks the International Day of the Tropics, designated by the UN in 2016. Today we praise tropical ecosystems that play a crucial role in global environmental health and the incredible diversity of tropical regions. However, these areas face great challenges nowadays.

???? For instance, did you know the tropics are home to 95% of the world's mangrove forests and 54% of its renewable water resources? They are! But the latest findings show that 50% of the mangrove ecosystems assessed are at risk of collapse. Mangrove forests are primarily threatened by human activities like deforestation, development, pollution, and dam construction.Given their accelerating rate of loss, mangrove forests may at least functionally disappear in as little as 100 years. ???? It also puts at risk over 40% of the global population and a significant portion of our planet's biodiversity, that the tropics house. Nearly half of the tropical population faces water stress, and poverty and undernourishment are higher than in other regions.
